Marine biologists are starting to get a good idea now of how squid hear and how they react to sounds in the ocean.
It is only recently that scientists have come to accept that cephalopods have any auditory capability at all.
But new experiments show noises of varying loudness and frequency will elicit a range of behaviours in the animals - such as jetting or inking, and even a change of colour.
The research has been featured at the biennial Ocean Sciences Meeting.
It was presented by Aran Mooney from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) of Massachusetts, US.
He is interested in squid because they represent something of a keystone species in the ocean, sitting right at the heart of many food webs. If they are not the predator in those webs, they will almost certainly be the prey.
And that makes it important to know whether anything we may be doing in the oceans could be unsettling them.
"We produce a lot of noise through exploration of the oceans, scientific research, oil drilling, gas exploration and commercial shipping," Dr Mooney tells BBC News.
"A lot of that is low-frequency noise, which is what squid detect. And if we're influencing these animals then presumably we could change their behaviour."
Previous work at WHOI's Sensory Physiology and Sensory Ecology Lab had established that squid could hear sounds in the range of 50Hz to 500Hz; but they are best below 300Hz. It is the same sort of range as fish.
The squid use two closely spaced organs called statocysts to sense sound.
"I think of a statocyst as an inside-out tennis ball," explains Dr Mooney.
"It's got hairs on the inside and this little dense calcium stone that sits on those hair cells.
"What happens is that the sound wave actually moves the squid back and forth, and this dense object stays relatively still. It bends the hair cells and generates a nerve response to the brain."
The latest research has attempted to gauge exactly what sound means to the squid, and how they might use it.
In a tank in his lab, Dr Mooney plays noises of varying loudness and frequency to the animals, and watches for their response. He has been able to map how the different levels of sound will prompt the cephalopods into different behaviours.
"They react in about 10 milliseconds," he says. "That's really fast; it's essentially a reflex. That's really important in terms of behavioural responses because they're not thinking about processing it; they're not deciding whether they should react - they're just doing it.
And he adds: "The responses can be really dynamic. They can be a change in colour; they can be jetting (moving quickly) or inking responses. Squid are also very cool because you can look at a range of colour changes - is it a really startling colour change or a more subtle change?
"Squid can probably use their hearing to find their way around the environment - to sense the soundscape of the environment; for example, to find their way towards a reef or away from a reef, towards the surface or away from the surface."
The research to date has concentrated on the longfin species (Loligo pealei), an important fishery on the East Coast of the US. But Dr Mooney plans to extend his studies to other cephalopods, such as another Loligo species on the West Coast and the eponymous Humboldt squid, which represent the largest invertebrate fishery in the world. Already in the lab, work has started on cuttlefish.
"They will ink more and jet more," says Dr Mooney. "We're finding subtle differences between the species that I wouldn't necessarily have expected. You just don't know until you try it. Go to octopuses and you may get a different response again; and the same is true with the really big squid."
Getting a giant squid into the WHOI tank might prove problematic. These creatures are rarely sighted, let along caught; and certainly not alive. But ongoing research is trying to establish more details about the functioning of squid statocysts, and from that information it may be possible to make some useful predictions about auditory talents of the oceans' largest cephalopods.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Hot Pants, Sex Toys and Boob-Centric Fights
Last week, Tamra, Vicki and their men traveled to Catalina for Tamra’s birthday. Eddie and Vicki held hands. So Tamra put Brooks’ hand on her own boob. Eddie got pissed.

Tamra realizes the error of her boob-grabbing ways.
She and Eddie go for a walk. Tamra breaks down and cries that she was jealous of all the attention Eddie was paying to Vicki and admits to the boob grab as an attention…uh…grabber because she LOVES.HIM.SO.MUCH.

Vicki and Brooks, meanwhile, think nothing of Tamra’s forced man-handling and go straight to dinner. Where the promptly order more booze.

Back on the mainland, Heather and Terry go to dinner and the waitress hands Heather the menu already opened. As soon as the waitress is out of earshot, Heather feels compelled to complain that the menu being already opened makes her feel rushed. Terry says he’s so hungry he doesn’t even think he can talk to Heather. I think he can’t talk to her because she’s a picky, snotty bitch.
She calls him “part husband, part little brother she never wanted” in a one-on-one, so I’m calling the fact that she looks at him as a brother Problem the First with this couple.
And then, just in case she hasn’t been ridiculous enough, she equates ordering Chinese takeout or reheating leftover soup with cooking dinner for her family every night. I wish that would fly with my husband.
Minus 20, Heather, for being obnoxious.
Tamra and Eddie have rejoined Vicki and Brooks at dinner, and Tamra’s about .02 seconds away from crying into her cocktails.
“I just…I’ve never loved any one as much as I love Eddie,” she blubbers, wiping her tears on her napkin.
Then Tamra lays down the law—Vicki and Eddie are not to so much as high five one another because seeing them touch even in the most platonic of ways makes her psycho.

This dinner just keeps getting weirder and weirder.
After reconciling and proclaiming they just need to drink more, Tamra begins to grill Brooks on whether or not he’s into the T or the A. Does he like fake boobs? BIG fake boobs? Big asses?

Gretchen and Slade are taking their overweight Chihuahuas for a walk. Except Gretchen picks one of them up. That’s not how you exercise a dog, Gretchen. And you’re wearing the most ridiculous outfit I’ve ever seen in my life. Minus 5 for the hot pants and boots get-up.
Slade’s been asked to do an improv stand-up routine and Gretchen’s not sure if he can pull this off. Slade thinks this is a career opportunity. Gretchen thinks he’s going to bomb, but she supports him. Hesitantly. Plus 5 for being sort of supportive.
Tamra and Eddie are back on the boat returning home from Catalina. Tamra doesn’t feel good. Eddie blames it on the boat. I’m blaming it on the booze.
Eddie has the most genius plan ever—that they not drink anymore. Oh, and that Tamra not put another man’s hand on her boob anymore. And he won’t touch her friends. But then she says she doesn’t care if he touches Vicki and their fight was stupid.
She says he’s her “hot dog” stand. And Eddie says “No, I’m a taco stand.” Tamra looks shocked. “No, I’m the taco stand!” Eddie replies, “No, you’re a pink taco stand.” And then Tamra almost vomited and so did I. Minus 5 because now I can never eat hot dogs or tacos again.
Heather’s planning a painting party. With cocktails and hors d’ouevres. None of the women have any idea what this “painting party” business is. None of them. Like, they’ve never even heard of this concept before. They are way more inclined to just purchase their paintings and not DIY them. Plus 10 to Heather for coming up with something original.
Tamra and Gretchen meet up for a little shopping. They’re bonding. Over sex toys. Tamra spends $265 there. I’m thinking this trip to the sex toy shop was a way to bond with Gretchen AND to patch things up with Eddie. Plus 10 for trying, Tamra.

Alexis and Gretchen split a limo ride and talk about the party at Vicki’s. Alexis is still hung up on the Peggy thing. She is the teacher from Charlie Brown to me right now. Let it go, Alexis. Just let it go. This is going to give you wrinkles and then you’re going to need more Botox. Minus 10 for rehashing this drama every.single.time. you can.
Vicki is the first to arrive at the studio, so she and Heather bond over their awesome immune systems. Tamra shows up and says she hasn’t been feeling well. Vicki, or maybe Heather, drop the “are you pregnant?” question. Tamra lets us all know she just put in her new Nuva Ring. Vicki says “I don’t do babies. Not at our age.” Tamra’s quick to say “our age? I’m not quite your age.” Vicki’s eyes get a little wide.
NICE, Tamra. Nice. I see a blow-out in your future, and I’m not talking about the kind you get at the salon. Minus 5 for insulting your supposed friend.
Gretchen drops the bomb on Alexis—she and Tamra are mending their fences. Alexis, as Gretchen’s “true friend,” advises Gretchen to be careful. Good looking out, Alexis. I think. Plus 5.
The ladies have all arrived at the painting studio and Heather, in addition to being a mom of 4, wife to a plastic surgeon, actress, model, and Chinese takeout orderer extraordinaire, is also planning to open a restaurant with some girlfriends. Terry shows up to meet the women his wife are spending time with. He recounts his day - a face lift in the morning, a nose job in the afternoon, and then a breast cancer reconstruction surgery. His favorite surgery is the face lift. Not the altruistic reconstruction. I’m giving him a side-eye for this.
Then he says he hates weddings. He even hated his own wedding. Plus 5, Terry, because you’re not afraid to admit you maybe made a mistake.
Except it gets better.
He says he and Heather were married happily for 5 years or so, but unfortunately, they’ve been married for 12 years. Plus 5 more because you made me laugh.
Tamra says “I was married 12 years once! Now I’m having GOOD SEX.” Vicki and Heather squirm a little more and Heather runs for the wine. Plus 10 to Tamra! Heather’s uncomfortable!
Brooks shows up, too. And I think he might be wearing the same outfit he wore on the boat to Catalina. It’s the outfit Vicki bought him and insisted he wear. I feel like she should buy him some more clothes so he can quit recycling this shirt. Except maybe she’d have to actually go to work to be able to afford them.
The paintings are framed and the women start debating who did the best job. Four out of five think Vicki’s is the best. Tamra, to be obnoxious, says she thinks Gretchen’s is the best. Gretchen squeals “Oh, you’re my BEE EFF EEEEFFFFFF!!!!!” And Vicki’s face almost explodes. Plus 10 to Tamra and Gretchen because Vicki’s face was priceless.

Gretchen reveals that she’s been getting messages all day about Brooks. He’s a “dead beat dad” who owes a lot of money in back child support and alimony and has been arrested. Gretchen’s willing to give the benefit of the doubt because anyone on the internet can make up lies. But she’s only giving so much benefit.
Slade, however, is not even sort of willing to give anyone the benefit of any doubt since Vicki and Tamra called him shady. Plus 10 to Slade for sticking up for himself.

SpaFinder Releases Fifth Annual State of Spa Travel Survey Findings

According to SpaFinders fifth annual State of Spa Travel survey released today, travel agents report that travel to hotel, resort and destination spas rebounded in 2010, and that spa travel is registering significantly bigger gains in 2011.
And, for the first time in the survey?s history, agents ranked ?increased client interest in spa travel specifically for wellness and health? as the #1 emerging trend, with social spa-ing (group travel to spas) rated as the second biggest trend, and people traveling solo ranking third.
And, surprisingly, despite the gradual economic and travel market recovery, 55% of agents reported that stay spas have been more aggressive with deals in 2011 compared to 2010, while another 37% report that the deals are holding firm.
Spas ongoing, greatly expanded focus on health, wellness and prevention, rather than mere pampering combined with their ongoing attractive pricing have been the two keys to this travel categorys resiliency over these last tough years, noted Susie Ellis, president, SpaFinder, Inc. And the #1 trend in 2011, what is called wellness tourism, shows that a new vacation concept is gaining traction: People are stressed and burned out, and they increasingly want to use their precious vacations to jumpstart healthy lifestyle changes, so they can return from trips feeling revitalized, rather than worse than when they left.
The survey was conducted in August 2011 with global travel agents. Its designed to provide annual insight into unfolding developments in the spa travel sector, including the overall health of the market, current pricing and consumer trends, traveler demographics and popular locations/amenities.
Key Findings
A Resilient 2010, An Even Better 2011
Forty-six percent of agents reported an increase in their spa travel bookings for full-year 2010, while 34% reported they remained about the same in 2010 compared with 2009. (One in five reported declines last year.)
But a significantly more robust 69% of agents predict growth for spa travel in 2011, while another 26% expect bookings to remain about the same in 2011 over 2010. So, 95% report that spa travel bookings will either grow or hold firm this year.
Hottest Trend Health & Wellness Spa Travel
Travel agents ranked ?increased interest in spa travel specifically for wellness & health,? i.e., clients seeking spas to better themselves through weight loss, fitness or stress-reduction programs/offerings, as the #1 fastest-growing spa travel trend.
Additionally, 79% of agents report clients are more interested in spa vacations with a strong health/wellness component in 2011 over 2010, while another 18% report the trend remains just as strong. This is up significantly from the 52% of agents that reported that health/wellness-focused spa travel was on the rise in 2009.
Rounding out the top 5 trends: 2) social spa-ing, or friends/groups hitting spas together; 3) people traveling solo to spa destinations; 4) spa travel for younger people (under 40); and 5) increased interest in international spa destinations.
Even More Aggressive Deals in 2011
Despite more bullish reports for travel generally, 55% of agents reported that hotel/resort/destination spas are actually offering more aggressive deals, attractive pricing and value-add packages in 2011 over 2010 with only 8% seeing any declines in the deals this year.
Price-per-Night Firms at Higher End
At the same time there seems to be some distinct price firming at the higher end of the market. For instance, in both 2009 and 2010, 75% of spa travel booked fell under $ 299/night, but that dropped to 62% this year. And, while in 2010, only 10% of bookings topped $ 350/night, this year that jumped to 21%. For 2011, the most commonly booked price-per-night is $ 250-$ 299, but 38% of bookings now fall in the $ 300+ range (up from 29% in 2010).
Baby Boomers Still Rule the Spa Pool
Baby Boomers (aged 46-65) remain the age demographic most likely to book spa travel, accounting for 68% of bookings in 2011. But the younger Gen X demographic is also a critical client base: Thirty-one percent of bookings this year are coming from those aged 36-45.
Spa Access Remains #1 Traveler Consideration
Agents ranked which offerings/amenities at destinations are most critical to their clients, and spa facilities retained the #1 position for the fifth straight year. The 2011 rankings: 1) spa facilities/access; 2) proximity to beach; 3) sightseeing; 4) nature-based activities, like hiking, etc.; 5) shopping; 6) golf facilities; and 7) skiing access.

Oceans set stage for human evolution

VANCOUVER ? Scientists may now be able to explain one of the key events that shaped human history: why East Africa got drier starting around 2 million years ago, with forests giving way to grasslands on which Homo could further evolve. Ocean temperature changes, especially the arrival of a strong warm/cool difference along the equator in the Indian Ocean, could have triggered the change.
?Those gradients are responsible for shifting rainfall towards or away from East Africa,? said Peter deMenocal, a paleoclimatologist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y. He presented new details about his idea on February 17 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Researchers infer that East Africa, where humans first evolved, started shifting toward grasslands by looking at data on the proportion of fossils of grazing animals, which peaked around 1.5 million years ago. Around this time Homo began to develop new tools, diversify into new species and make its first tentative forays out of Africa.
But despite a raft of theories, scientists haven?t been able to explain what triggered the drying responsible for the shift to grasslands. The ocean gradient idea might do the trick, deMenocal said.
?At first blush it doesn?t seem intuitively obvious, but what controls rainfall in the tropics is where the warm water is,? he said. More rain occurs where the ocean is warmest, because water can more readily evaporate and fall back as rain.
deMenocal and his colleagues looked at deep-sea sediment cores, representing the last several million years, drilled across the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Most strikingly, a site in the eastern Indian Ocean and another in the western Indian Ocean show temperatures tracking similarly until around 2 million years ago, when the eastern site warmed and the western site cooled. If so, then the cool waters off East Africa would have dried out that part of the continent, deMenocal said.
Next the scientists ran computer simulations that erased the east/west temperature difference and showed what might happen if temperatures were the same along the equator across the Indian Ocean. That change shut down a type of atmospheric circulation, making East Africa wetter than it is today.
Taken together, deMenocal said, ?I think this is pretty solid evidence for a transition to more open conditions [in East Africa] at this time.? What kicked off the change in ocean temperatures, though, remains a mystery.
Other, more recent climate changes may have also shaped the course of human evolution, said Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist at the University of Victoria in Canada. At the conference he reported new simulations looking at climate changes that happened about 105,000 years ago, around the time modern humans, Homo sapiens, were moving out of Africa.
When the northern ice sheets dumped great icebergs into the ocean, freshening the water there, rain belts in Africa also shifted, Weaver reported. In this case, the change may have dried out much of northern Africa, compelling H. sapiens to leave its birth continent.

GENEVA ? The tidy Swiss want to clean up space.
Swiss scientists said Wednesday they plan to launch a "janitor satellite" specially designed to get rid of orbiting debris known as space junk.
The 10-million-franc ($11-million) satellite called CleanSpace One ? the prototype for a family of such satellites ? is being built by the Swiss Space Center at the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology in Lausanne, or EPFL.
EPFL said Wednesday its launch would come within three to five years and its first tasks are to grab two Swiss satellites launched in 2009 and 2010.
The U.S. space agency NASA says over 500,000 pieces of spent rocket stages, broken satellites and other debris are being tracked as they orbit Earth.
The debris travels at speeds approaching 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour), fast enough to destroy or inflict costly and time-draining damage on a satellite or spacecraft. Collisions, in turn, generate more fragments floating in space.
"It has become essential to be aware of the existence of this debris and the risks that are run by its proliferation," said Claude Nicollier, an astronaut and EPFL professor.
Building the satellite means developing new technology to address three big problems, scientists say.
The first hurdle has to do with trajectory: The satellite has to be able to adjust its path to match that of its target. EPFL said its labs are looking into a new ultra-compact motor that can do this.
Next, the satellite has to be grab hold of and stabilize the debris at high speeds. Scientists are studying how plants and animals grip things as a model for what would be used.
And, finally, CleanSpace One has to be able to take the debris, or unwanted satellites, back into Earth's atmosphere, where they will burn on re-entry.
Swiss Space Center's director, Volker Gass, said it hopes to someday "offer and sell a whole family of ready-made systems, designed as sustainably as possible, that are able to de-orbit several different kinds of satellites."

In Iran, a Stirring of Green Protesters Produces a Clampdown (Time.com)
There was a palpable sense of excitement among the supporters of Iran's opposition Green Movement in recent weeks. A mass rally was planned for Tuesday, the one-year anniversary of the house arrest of opposition leaders Mir Hussein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi, and a large turnout was expected. Flyers were posted on opposition websites and the Twitter-verse was abuzz with messages from Green supporters encouraging each other.
The Iranian regime squashed it. Even though Green supporters hit the streets in Tehran and smaller cities like Isfahan and Shiraz on Tuesday, they appeared to be outnumbered by security forces, according to accounts on opposition websites. There were also reports of arrests and sporadic clashes between riot police and demonstrators on some opposition sites. Still, the presence of demonstrators in the streets of large Iranian cities for the first time in a year shows that the Green Movement hasn't been completely snuffed out. "You can't gauge the amount of support for the opposition by the number of people in the streets. The strong crackdown by the government keeps many people away," says Hossein Bastani, an Iran analyst based in Paris. "But when there's any people at all in the streets, it still rattles the regime." In two weeks, Iran's leaders will ask voters to hit the polls for a key vote for the majlis or parliament. Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei raised concerns about the possibility of election unrest in a Friday prayers speech two weeks ago. "The busier the ballot box and the higher the rate of participation, the greater the prestige and strength of the country," Khamenei said. And he warned of the potential pitfalls ahead. "The enemy doesn't want this. It's been two or three months that the enemy has spread propaganda to discourage people from participating in the elections. And some inside the country, without knowing what they're doing, are saying the same things. This is a careless and mercenary attitude."
Last year on Feb. 14, opposition leaders Moussavi and Karroubi called for the "25th of Bahman" protests, named after the date in the Iranian calendar, to show solidarity with the Arab Spring uprisings in the region. One of the popular slogans used by demonstrators last year was "Mubarak, Ben Ali, now it's time for Seyed Ali," a reference to Supreme Leader Khamenei. There was a massive turnout in Tehran and other cities and two protesters were killed, according to opposition sources. (Can Israel Stop Iran's Nuke Effort?)
This year, the regime was well prepared. For more than a week, there has been a blackout on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Even Gmail and Yahoo email were blocked. Internet speeds have almost ground to a halt. And then the intimidation campaign began: text messages and emails were sent out to students and activists threatening them with arrest if they participated in the planned demonstration on Tuesday. There was also a wave of arrests of activists in the lead-up to Tuesday's protest, according to opposition websites.
Green Movement supporters had called for demonstrators to rally in the streets of Tehran by 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Photos posted on opposition sites showed that security forces had already flooded the streets by that time. Text messaging services were also shut down. The protesters who did hit the streets in Tehran largely stayed away from controversial slogans this year, as had been advised in the demonstration flyers.
The irony is that the Iranian regime's crackdown on the "25th of Bahman" protest on Tuesday coincided with the one-year anniversary of the democratic uprising in Bahrain, a largely Shi'a-led protest movement that the Iranian government strongly supports.
"In Iran, if the security forces backed off for one day, only one day, you would see the real strength of the opposition," says Bastani. That's unlikely to happen anytime soon. In fact, the riot police are no doubt gearing up to hit the streets again for Iran's parliamentary elections on March 2.
